Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
This is my version of a FAQ, I am just going to speak in first person and answer a bunch of the most common questions I get so that you can better understand who I am and what I do. I’ll probably include some questions that I’ve never been asked but I. AM. THE DECIDER around here—my name is in the friggin’ url. I keep my personality off the internet as much as I can, so consider this a little insider info that nobody but the deepest diggers dug. Ya dig’?
What is palette knife painting?
Palette knives are tools for mixing paint that can be used in a similar but less predictable way as a brush. They are usually made of thin, flexible metal and come in every size and shape imaginable. I actually use tools made for drywall work when making really large pieces. I like the palette knife because you have to experiment; there isn’t 500 years of art history to go back and reference like there is with the brush.
Describe your style, what’s this all about?
I am going to focus on the palette knife thing—I’ve got work in every style and medium imaginable out there but I am quite content being known for and concentrating on palette knife painting.
I love texture. Texture is what defines my work no matter what medium. There’s nothing more textural than a giant dollop of dried paint—it’s a sculpture all it’s own. That’s what my work is, little sculptures of paint that remind you of something else. I know that pop art is a dirty word and I belong to the lowest phyllum of artists but I don’t give a shit. Pollack and Rothke and all those other guys were the first to make paintings about PAINT. I make paintings about paint, but added Mickey Mouse. It’s not abstract expressionism. It’s definately not impressionism, nor is it illustration. It’s something else and it’s all about color and YOUR perception.
The worst thing an artist can do is just give you back an image you’ve seen a thousand times and try and spin it a bit. Add some ink splatters or make it all pencil—that’s kitchsche to me. I am trying to give you things you’ve seen before but in a totally new way. Sometimes taken apart, sometimes reimagined or abstracted. My art isn’t about me, it’s about what you see. How your life and journey has made you see my image in a certain way. Sometimes I make stuff from my head sure, I charge more for it too but the pop art stuff, the things I am reimagining—those are for you, totally.
You mentioned you painted in other styles, like commercially?
I don’t publish a client list or plaster my instagram profile with the people and companies I’ve worked with because I really don’t like trading on the credibility of others—also I don’t keep an online portfolio as I am not activelly seeking work but yes I have done extensive commercial work both digital and traditional. You may have found your way here via my illustration work in comics and wondered if you were in the right place, yes I am that guy! I occassionally release limited prints of other mediums and styles and it wouldn’t take much convincing to get me to paint or draw something without using a palette knife. Watercolor is actually my favorite medium
