What’s a commission?
Commission is the word that artists use for a painting or work that we make just for you, custom art. Mike makes lots of things for open sale but he’s never going to make a painting of your sister, so if you have a specific request like that and dig his palette knife style then submit a request here.
What sizes do you make?
Mike paints them on two different surfaces with two different sizing requirements.
On heavy paper for framing under glass: 11x14” minimum, 18x24” maximum.
On canvas: 16x20” minimum, no maximum. Largest piece to date was 8’x10’ (that’s feet). Canvas pieces over 24x36” are shipped rolled either with or without frame and will need to be stretched/framed locally. This is to prevent damage and save you an incredible amount of money.
Do you take all requests?
No, but Mike responds to every request made via the web form on this site—alternatively you can DM Mike on Instagram (don’t do both) and he will respond there as well. We get more requests than Mike could ever paint but he does a few hundred commissions every year of every size and subject matter imaginable.
Priority goes to those expanding their existing palette knife pop art collections, so if you already own his art make sure you mention it.
How long does it take once you’ve paid?
All commissions are prepaid but Mike won’t take payment until he is ready to start on your work. Once paid things typically ship within 5-10 days. He sends photos before shipping to make sure no adjustments need to be made as well. Commission status (open/closed) can be found on Mike’s Instagram profile.
How much does it cost?
On the whole Mike’s art is very affordable, the prices are generally in line with what you see listed for open sale in the shop with size being the biggest factor in the cost. The smallest palette knife commissions available are 11x14” and start at $129 shipped. The typical 24x36” canvas portrait is around $800.
I love the detailed ones but I hate the abstract ones, do I just get what I get?
Good question! Though you could have worded it better. Commissions are absolutely non-refundable and paid in-full upfront—HOWEVER—Mike absolutely recognizes that his work varies greatly in detail, style and feel so as long as you can point him to the work that made you want a commission then it will be the level of detail and color intensity that suites you! He will work directly with you in the discovery phase to get this all sorted. He’s made thousands and thousands of commissions and his success rate of very happy people is well over 99%. On average every year there’s a problem and as Mike put it, “I always think it’s them but it could be me, I’m not perfect but I’m nice. Tell them to be nice too, but don’t be a jerk about it — I don’t like hypocrisy and I’m irony deficient.”
